Buying LED bulbs for enclosed fixtures

Check the bulb’s permitted use before replacing a globe light.

Identify the fitting

A ceiling globe, sealed decorative cover or other restricted fitting can limit airflow around a bulb. Photograph the fixture label and read its instructions before choosing a replacement. Keep the cover and its fastening parts with the fitting. The replacement decision needs to account for how the fixture operates when fully assembled.

Look for explicit approval

Check the exact bulb model’s packaging or specification sheet for enclosed-fixture suitability. Do not infer approval from the bulb’s physical size, low wattage or an LED description. If the listing is unclear, look up the manufacturer’s documentation. Also check whether the fixture itself permits the bulb type and dimensions you plan to use.

Compare all the requirements

Enclosed-fixture approval answers one question. Base, voltage, actual wattage, physical clearance, location rating and dimmer compatibility still need separate checks. Make a short list of the fixture’s requirements and mark each against the candidate bulb. That is easier to verify than comparing a long list of marketing features.

Record the successful replacement

When you find a suitable bulb, save its full model number with the fixture details. Check that the cover can be refitted as designed and that the bulb does not touch it. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions throughout. If the fixture shows damage, discolouration or a persistent fault, have it assessed before continuing to use it.
