Choosing LED bulbs for an existing dimmer
Check the bulb and control as a combination.
Identify your control
Write down the dimmer’s manufacturer and model number before shopping. Check its instructions or the manufacturer’s current compatibility information. A dimmable label on a bulb tells you it supports some dimming arrangements. It does not establish that your particular control will work well with it. Record how many bulbs the control operates because the complete load matters.
Compare the listed requirements
Look for the dimmer model in the bulb maker’s compatibility information, or the bulb model in the dimmer maker’s list. Check minimum and maximum supported LED loads and any restrictions on mixing bulbs. Keep actual LED wattage separate from the incandescent-equivalent figure printed on the front of the box. Use the actual wattage when following load instructions.
Test the full range
Try the light at full output and at the lowest setting you intend to use. Listen for buzzing and watch for flicker, an abrupt shutoff or a bulb that fails to start at a low setting. Follow the control maker’s instructions for any user adjustment. If several bulbs share one fitting, assess them together before ordering replacements for the entire room.
Smart bulbs need their own check
Many smart bulbs are intended for a constant supply and use app-based dimming. Check the specific model’s instructions before combining it with an existing wall dimmer. If the control requires replacement or wiring changes, use a qualified electrician and keep the compatibility details with your household records.
