Choosing lights for a porch or exposed outdoor area
Buy for the installed location and winter conditions.
Describe the location precisely
A bulb sheltered inside a covered porch fitting faces different conditions from an exposed floodlight. Before shopping, photograph the fitting and read its label and instructions. Record whether rain can reach the installed light directly. Check the bulb and fixture together, including any cover or seal that must remain in place.
Read location and temperature ratings
Look for the manufacturer’s damp or wet location rating for the intended installation. For an exposed position, confirm the product is approved for that exposure. Check the operating temperature range against your local winter conditions. A search result labelled outdoor is only a starting point. Open the specification sheet and verify the exact model.
Aim light where it is useful
List what you want to illuminate, such as a door handle, steps or a driveway edge. Compare beam direction, mounting position and controls before choosing maximum output. From the proposed location, consider neighbouring windows and the line of sight of someone approaching the entrance. A shielded or directed fitting can help keep light on the intended area.
Check controls before ordering
For a motion-sensor or dusk-to-dawn light, read the adjustment range and any restrictions involving existing switches or sensors. If replacing only a bulb, check compatibility with the existing control. Follow installation instructions for seals and mounting. Have electrical repairs or wiring changes handled by a qualified electrician.
