Planning garage and workbench lighting

Work from the tasks and mounting points.

Map the space

Sketch the garage with the door open and closed, then mark workbenches, storage and existing fittings. Include the ceiling height and the path of the moving door. A fitting that looks compact in a listing can interfere with a door mechanism or be poorly positioned over a bench. Use dimensions from the product documentation before choosing a location.

Separate general and task light

General lighting helps you move through the space. A bench light should illuminate the surface where you work without your body blocking it. Stand at the bench and identify the likely shadow direction. Comparing these two needs can reveal that one targeted light is more useful than simply increasing the ceiling light’s output.

Compare installation needs

For a plug-in shop light, check lead length, permitted mounting method and access to a suitable outlet. For a screw-in multi-panel bulb, check the socket, fixture rating and available clearance. Read any limits on linked fittings and use only the connection method specified by the manufacturer. Match the product’s operating temperature to the space.

Make the final check at the bench

Once a suitable light is installed according to its instructions, inspect the actual work area after dark. Check reflections from tools and shiny surfaces, readability of markings and shadows around your hands. Adjust only as the product permits. Wiring work or a damaged socket should be assessed by a qualified electrician.
