How to choose under-cabinet lighting
Measure the work surface and plan the power route.
Draw the cabinet runs
Make a simple sketch of each cabinet section, the counter below it and the outlets nearby. Measure the usable underside of the cabinets and mark interruptions such as a range hood or sink. Note where the cabinet lip could hide a fitting. Use the sketch to compare light lengths and connection leads before ordering a kit.
Compare three common formats
Plug-in light bars can be convenient for a counter used every day when a suitable outlet is available. LED strips can fit long runs, but the kit’s cutting points, connectors and power supply need careful checking. Rechargeable bars can suit occasional use where you want to avoid a visible lead, with charging added to your routine. Choose the format that fits how you actually use the space.
Think about shadows and reflections
Before fixing lights permanently, check the permitted mounting position against your normal working position. Look for shadows on the chopping area and reflections in a glossy counter. A diffuser can make individual light points less noticeable. Match the light colour to nearby fittings if you want a consistent appearance.
Check the complete kit
Confirm what is included, how the lights attach, the total supported run and whether additional connectors are required. Read the location rating for the proposed position. Keep wiring and power supplies in the locations allowed by the instructions. Use a qualified electrician for a hardwired installation.
